Forge
With the introduction of Evony Age 2, the Forge is now a very important building. The reason is that you now need the forge to be able to place gems on the equipment that your heroes use. You use the gems to improve the attributes the gear give to your heroes. There are 3 types of gems in Evony Age 2 that you can place on your gear, Rubies, Sapphires and Topazes. Each of these gems comes from level 1 to level 10. You can read more about upgrading you gear in the forge here.
You also use the Forge to smelt to gems together to form one more powerful gem. You can read in detail about how the gem smelting process works here. In Age 1 the forge was pretty useless, the only thing you needed it for was as a prerequisite for building a workshop and researching military science.
Primary and Senior advanced blacksmithing.
Primary advanced blacksmithing and Senior advanced blacksmithing are the two items of Evony Age II that you can use to increase your chance of success when melting gems. Advanced gems smelting is the process of melting two lower level gems together to one higher level gems. Using the primary advanced blacksmithing item you can increase your chance of success by 30%, while using the senior advanced blacksmithing item you can increase your chance of success by 60%.
