The cottage is a building which you build to provide shelter to your city’s people. You are allowed to build a cottage only with-in your city walls. Building a cottage allows your city’s population to grow, allowing more people to make your city their home. At level 1, a cottage will increase you city’s population by 100, and increase it accordingly each time you upgrade.

Also note to build a cottage you need resources, which you will pay when you construct one. For a level 1 cottage you need to pay 100 food, 500 lumber, 100 stone and 50 iron with a build time of 1 minute and 15 seconds. You need a certain number of cottages in each of your cities, usually about 6 once you’ve got all your barracks leveled up.

This startup guide is for new servers where resources are still very cheap in terms of gold. The first few weeks of a server food is only about 0.1 gold each and the other resources are at about 0.2 – 0.4. We want to take advantage of this by having a high gold income, and focus most of our resources on building cottages for the first few days. Later on you will remove some of them for barracks, but early on we don’t need that many barracks since we’ll only be building warriors and we don’t have enough resources to keep a bunch of barracks running all the time.

What I do on a new server is to first complete the quests to get the basic buildings you need in your city. You get as much resources in reward for completing the quests as it costs you to build the first few levels of every building, sometimes even more, so there is no reason not to do so right away. Spend some guidelines to speed things up if you want. You build one of each resources and then fill up the rest of your fields with mostly wood and a few of stone.  Wood is the most important resource for you early since you will be building cottages. Having a high population early on in the game is pretty important as that will give you a high tax income. Early on most resources are really cheap in terms of gold, so having a high gold income is much more important than having a high resources production. Building a new city in Evony is actually quite easy. First you need to have a high enough title, to build your second village you need to be a Knight. You get to that title by following the promotion quests, and you need the items in your beginner package. You find your package under the package symbol top left on your screen.
