Open gate to fight
Controlling your gates and deciding when to open your gate to fight is an important aspect of Evony. Some form of attacks work very well on your city when your gates are open, and some work very well when your gates are closed. All this assumes that you have filled up your wall with fortifications of course, but most cities will be filled up with that within a week after they are built. I suggest mostly archer towers and some traps and abatis as well.
If your city is well defended you usually want to have your gates open at all times. If you have your gates closed other players can easily run in with 100k archers and destroy all your archers towers and traps. Then they can send in some cavalry to take out your abatis and leave your city with no fortifications left at all. They will also most likely have taken a huge chunk of your honor in the process. Fortifications takes quite a while to rebuild so you don’t want this to happen to you.
The only time you should not open gate to fight an incoming attack is when it is a scout bomb. You can easily identify a scout bomb attack with the high speed it comes with, no other troops are even close to scouts in speed after all. You want the scouts to crash into your archer towers and die there, if not 100k scouts might end up taking out 30k archers which is really a bad result for you. At all other times, assuming you have a well defended city, keep your city gates open.

all you need to remember about gates really is that if their closed, only wall defences will defend against an attack. If their open then both wall defences and troops will be involved. useful if you want to preserve your troops from a massively superior incoming attack.

If an alliance is at war with another, and r colinized by them. Then the other alliance ends the war, do we still have to uprise? Or will they leave automaticly?

I have opende the gate, and there are troops in my town, but the suprression keeps counting down!! what why??
